Strength training in adult elite tennis players
(Krafttraining von Hochleistungs-Tennisspielern im Erwachsenenalter)
In light of this discussion, it`s clear that well-designed strength training programs are vital to a tennis athlete`s performance. Therefore, periodization is crucial to maximize the variable resources of strength, power, and muscular endurance upon which competition performance depends. The early portion of the preparation phase of a periodized program ought to begin with an emphasis on basic strength development comprising highvolume, low-intensity work. During this phase, players have plenty of time to prepare themselves. In the in-season phase, training conditions change radically. Athletes spend less time in the gym and/or court for physical/strength training. The objective at this stage is to stabilize technique, maximal strength, and power.
In the competition phase, periodization could adopt a mixed model, alternating heavy loads with light weights, within either the same session or in the same week. Normally, players perform 1 or 2 strength training sessions per week during preparation for major competitions. Consequently, it is suggested that some days prior to a tournament, subjects should follow a maintenance strength training program, in order to avoid detraining effects on performance and to prevent injury. The maintenance of physiological conditioning requires sufficient volume, intensity, and frequency during this long period. Only within an appropriately planned strength training program cycle can small day-to-day adjustments be made in order to manage fatigue and recovery carefully while simultaneously improving or maintaining previous gains in strength and power levels. The combined manipulation of, and adjustment between, the 3 variables of volume, intensity, and frequency, together with the ongoing pursuit of excellence in game technique, should be carefully balanced. In summary, optimal programming entails the flexibility to develop a plan that works for each tennis player. The key is to individualize the strength training program according to training background, injury status, and the competition calendar and its rigors.
