Tennis versus golf: demand and performance profile
(Tennis vs. Golf: Anforderungen und Leistungsprofil)
The purpose of the study was to compare the physiological profile of demands between tennis and golf, and its possible effects
on physical performance in senior players.
The participants were 38 Division IV and V male senior tennis players and 15 senior male golfers with a mean handicap of 18.
Heart rate, lactate, oxygen consumption, RPE scale, serum concentrations of free fatty acids and urine concentrations of
epinephrine and norepinephrine were measured during 18 holes of golf and a two-set single competition in tennis. All subjects
also underwent an incremental ergometer test.
The results showed that metabolic and haemodynamic demands were uniformly higher in tennis than in golf. Only in tennis is
the overall exercise intensity sufficient to induce improvements in physical performance.
