Systemic video analysis of hamstring injury mechanism for professional athletes: sprint-type injuries occurring during the swing phase of the running cycle
(Systemische Videoanalyse des Verletzungsmechanismus der hinteren Oberschenkelmuskulatur bei Profisportlern: Verletzungen des Sprinttyps, die während der Schwungphase des Laufzyklus auftreten)
BACKGROUND
Hamstring injuries significantly affect the performance of high-speed athletes such as football, rugby, and American football. One of the methods to determine an injury mechanism in detail is to examine the event and the posture of the athlete at the time of injury using video analysis method. There here is limited data on systematic video analysis of hamstring injuries in athletes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the posture of the body parts regarding the injury mechanism using a video analysis method in athletes who were exposed to a sprint-type hamstring injury at the time of injury.
METHODS
Using publicly available data, hamstring injuries of 86 elite athletes were identified between 1989 and 2021. Sixty-one athletes with sufficient injury data and video recordings were included in the study. Of these, 32 had sprint type hamstring injuries. Injury mechanism, body posture, and player and sports characteristics were evaluated by 3 independent reviewers. The mean age was 27.7±4.7 years. The distribution of athletes was as follows: 8 basketball players (13.1%), 8 American football players (13.1%), 1 cricket player (1.7%), 16 baseball players (26.2%), 14 rugby players (22.9%), 1 obstacle race runner (1.7%), 5 marathon runners (8.2%) and 8 soccer players (13.1%).
RESULTS
The leg was observed just before the foot contact with the ground while the body was tilted forward in the swing phase. The mean flexion values of the trunk, hip, knee and ankle at the exact time of injury were 21.28° (±13.21°), 22.27° (±31.30°), 53.01° (±21.70°) and 10.86° (±14.10°), respectively.
CONCLUSION
Sprint type hamstring injuries occur during the swing phase of the running cycle. The injury is observed when the leg is not in contact with the ground, while the hip, knee, and ankle are in flexion position
