Water polo in depth

(Wasserball - tiefer betrachtet)

Water Polo is the oldest team sport participating in the Olympic Games, and first appeared in 1900 during the Paris games. This paper focuses exclusively on the sport of water polo and is a timely contribution to literature on the sport, in the centenary celebration year of water polo competition in the Olympic Games. The presentation is essentially a comprehensive review of books, articles, and related literature which have been written about water polo over the past 50 years. The review traces the depth of literature published over this period, and focuses on a number of aspects detailing various psychological, physiological, sociological, and historical reports. Specifically, the paper reviews the depth of water polo literature across historical biographies and autobiographies, coaching, testing and evaluation, techniques and skills, Olympic participation, statistics and records, rules and regulations, biomechanics, physical fitness and conditioning, injuries and accidents, anthropometry, and participation by women as well as other related categories. The paper also addresses the substantial international contributions made to water polo by authors from backgrounds other than English.
