Sex differences in recovery trajectories of assessments for sport-related concussion among NCAA athletes: A CARE consortium study

(Geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede im Erholungsverlauf bei sportbedingten Gehirnerschütterungen bei NCAA-Sportlern: Eine Studie des CARE-Konsortiums)

Key Points Female athletes are significantly under-represented in studies cited by concussion consensus statements. Therefore, it remains unknown whether common and emerging concussion assessments have similar recovery trajectories in female and male athletes. Our findings suggest that for all but one outcome measure (i.e., Vestibular Ocular Motor Screen Total Symptom Scores), female and male athletes followed similar recovery trajectories. Female athletes had higher Vestibular Ocular Motor Screen Total Symptom Scores than male athletes at the 24-48 h timepoint, but this difference resolved by the time of return-to-play initiation. Because studies (including this one) conducted at National Collegiate Athletic Association institutions with high levels of sports medicine care indicate similar concussion recovery trajectories between female and male athletes, perhaps we should place more emphasis on providing equitable care to female and male athletes, rather than establishing sex-specific concussion protocols.
