Effects of foam rolling on tissue stiffness in back muscles after a rowing workout: A case series

This case series sought to understand the effects of exercise and foam rolling as a form of myofascial release on tissue stiffness in the muscles and fascia of the back. A literature review was conducted to understand relevant research concerning tissue stiffness in the back and the implications to inform study design. Previous research indicates that tissue stiffness is an indicator of health and functionality of fascia in the back. However, the effects of exercise and myofascial release on tissue stiffness in the back have yet to be established. Three physically active male subjects between the ages of 18 and 25 who had no experience with back injury or pathologies were recruited. The subjects completed a rowing workout followed by a foam rolling or rest session depending on their group assignment. Subjects were randomly assigned to foam roll or rest following exercise. The subjects completed a rowing workout followed by a foam rolling or rest session depending on their group assignment. Tissue stiffness was measured before the rowing workout and following completion of foam rolling or rest. Changes in tissue stiffness were variable and inconclusive across subjects and the two intervention types. The findings of this case series demonstrate the variety of factors, such as hydration, exercise and foam rolling form, that contribute to tissue stiffness and should be considered in future research.
