Injuries of Greek rowers participating on different competitive categories
(Verletzungen griechischer Ruderer verschiedener Wettkampfdisziplinen)
The purpose of this study was to report the frequency, characteristics and causes of injuries sustained by Greek male and female rowers of all competitive categories. Information pertaining to the injuries was obtained from a total of 211 rowers (156 male and 55 female). The questionnaire investigated injuries that occurred over the preceding two years (rowers competed in the category classified). The injury- report-form included 14 closed-type questionnaires. The commonest injury site for all male rowers was primarily the lumbar area (46.7%) and secondly the knee (18.6%); while for women and junior female rowers the lower back (29.1% and 29.4% respectively), followed by the knee (28.6% and 11.8%) and the elbow (7.1% and 11.8%). Among young male rowers (youths) low back had the greatest incidence (12%). Junior males also had pain in the lower back (19.5%). Seniors presented mainly lower back injuries (35%). Both genders reported training on land (in the gym) as the risk factor most significantly associated with injury. In summary, the most commonly reported injury sites are low back, the knee and the shoulder.
