Finite Element Model of Rigger Deformation: A Static Analysis

Riggers elastically deform during a rowing cycle. The above animation is representative of the direction of elastic deformation. This view of the rigger is from within the boat. The right-most structural members are to the bow, and the left most structural member is to the stern. The red circles indicate bolted joints to the gunwale of the boat. The illustration does not accurately show the magnitude of the deformation. The magnitude of deformation has been exaggerated by a factor of 10 so that displacements can easily be viewed. ALGOR finite element software was used to perform a simple beam model of the rigger. The results of the analysis were used to determine the optimum location of strain gages on an actual rigger for dynamic analysis.
