Various morphological indicators in elite judo athletes defined by multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis
(Verschiedene morphologische Indikatoren bei Spitzenjudoka, bestimmt mit der multifrequenten bioelektrischen Impedanzanalyse)
During years of training, an athlete passes through different stages of development, in which the control of the effects of the applied training methods has the key role. In a weight-classified sport such as judo, body composition is an important component. The present study aimed to define the morphological indicators of the body status in elite judoka, to which purpose multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (InBody 720) was used. The sample comprised 41 male judo athletes competing at the elite senior level in Serbian Judo Super League in the following weight categories: -66kg, -73kg, -81kg, -90kg, -100kg and +100kg. In this study, 11 variables were used: 2 were primary and 9 were derived (index) variables, which defined the morphology and body composition. With respect to the newly introduced indices, used to define the morphological structure in judo athletes in different weight categories, the strongest discriminative capacity was observed in FFMI-Free Fat Mass Index (F=16.88), followed by MMI-Muscle Mass Index (F=15.39), PMI-Protein Mass Index (F=13.58), IFD-Index of Fat Distribution (F=8.01), and FMI-Fat Mass Index (F=5.70), while the lowest value was found in PFI-Protein Fat Index (F=1.34). Due to the specific morphology in judo athletes, further standardization of morphological variables and index norms to estimate the body composition is required.
