An evaluation of a leadership development program for intercollegiate wrestling coaches
(Eine Bewertung eines Entwicklungsprogramms für Ringertrainer im College-Bereich)
The overarching purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy a component (two online modules) of a coaching leadership program. Additionally, coaches` opinions regarding the ease and effectiveness of an online learning environment were examined. In Phase 1, qualitative interviews were conducted with key stakeholders to identify the outcomes and objectives of the intervention broadly, and of two of the online modules, specifically. The stakeholders hoped that the coaches would: develop a broader awareness of their coaching role, approach their role similar to that of a CEO, and reflect on their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, the stakeholders wanted the coaches to: improve communication skills, develop a program vision, and bring in assistants to supplement their weaknesses. Phase 2 aimed to examine the effectiveness of the two modules in increasing knowledge, intended use, and actual use of material covered. In Phase 2 results indicated that the online modules effectively increased knowledge and intended use of the material covered. Phase 3 examined the coaches` perspectives regarding the ease and utility of the online video format. The coaches perceived that the online modules met their needs, were easy to use, and were an effective way of delivering that style of leadership content.
