Investigation of gender differences in motion factors affecting throwing record in javelin throw
(Untersuchung geschlechtsspezifischer Unterschiede der Bewegungsmerkmale, die Rekordleistungen im Speerwurf beeinflussen)
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether it is gender differences of motion factors that affect throwing record in the javelin throw. Throwing motion of javelin were collected from 91 male and 81 female javelin throwers of the right throw at a wide range of levels during several competition (including the gold medalist at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Osaka). The throwers and javelin movement were recorded with two cameras at 60 fps, and three-dimensional coordinates were calculated using Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) methods. Analysis timing of throwing motion was at the final right foot contact (R-on), the left foot contact (L-on),and the release of the javelin (REL). Moreover, between the R-on to L-on was preparatory phase, and between the L-on to REL was the throwing phase. The main results were as follows; (1) The center of gravity velocity of females was slower than males in all timings. (2) The shoulder and hip angle of females were more left rotatedposition (with the trunk open state) at the L-on. (3) The shoulder rotation angle of females at the L-on showed a significant positive correlation with the throwing record. These results suggested that there were characteristics of the throwing motion of female different from male. The torso of female javelin throwers was more left rotational state than male at the preparatory phase, and it was showed that there are gender differences of motion factors in the javelin throw. They were caused by physicalgender differences in physique, muscle strength, and joint laxity.
