Olympics 2012 athletics performance & results report. European perspective

(Leistungs- und Egebnisbericht der Olympischen Sommerspiele 2012. Europäische Sicht)

For the high performance end of Olympic Sports, the basic timeframe for strategic planning is the four year Olympic cycle. The Games themselves are the focus of that planning. While the Games are an end in themselves as the pinnacle of competitive challenge, they are also the basis for measuring the effectiveness of the strategic plan in delivering performance and results objectives. And on top of this, the four year operation and the Games themselves represent a critical learning experience and as such are a fundamental resource in designing the next four year strategic plan. The outcomes of the four year operation are the performances and results in the Games. They are the consequence of the strategic plan design and delivery. The purpose of the debriefing process following the Games is to review all factors which culminated with that consequence, together with interpreting the consequence itself. It is through the debrief that we leverage the learning experience. An approach to the debrief process is subject of the document "Essential Debrief Matters." Through this process we may consider the role delivery of athlete, coach, performance scientist and medicinal professionals, managers, policy makers and others in relation to the consequence. It is in learning from this process that we are better equipped to plan for and work towards a better consequence in the next Olympic Games. Each Olympic Games is, then, the final dress rehearsal for the next. So the last step to the podium in London was the first step to the podium in Rio. To afford the London 2012 debrief process context, it seems appropriate to review overall performance, results and apparent major trends. Such is the purpose of this report, which is part of European Coaches/European Athletics Coaches Association Partnership in coach development. The concluding recommendations may suggest appropriate action as part of the 2012-2016 strategy. The report covers: 1. The position in league table form of the nations at the Games. 2. The technical overview prepared by Elio Locatelli. 3. The age group distribution of finalists and medalists - men and women; world and European. 4. The proportion of World Junior Championship medalists 2000-2010 who made Olympic finals or medals in 2012 (data by courtesy of Peter Matthews). 5. European performance 1988-2012 at Olympics (data by courtesy of Peter Matthews and Frank Hensel) 6. Athletes` "Delivery on the Day". (data by courtesy of Mirko Jalava) 7. Recommendations
