Relationship between short and long-term planning in sports: case study of a high-level Spanish canoeing coach
(Verhältnis zwischen kurz- und langfristiger Planung im Sport: Fallstudie eines spanischen Spitzensportlers im Kanusport)
This dissertation aimed to further explore current knowledge on the sports planning process, specifically the relationship between short- and long-term planning. The first article, a literature review regarding this topic, aimed to clarify this intricate relationship, while delving into the multifaceted realm of sports planning, and exploring how coaches navigate the dynamics between short- and long-term timeframes to optimize the training process. This review organized the existing conceptual framework regarding sports planning and the intricate interplay between different temporal aspects and emphasized the pivotal significance of adaptability and flexibility in the development of athlete performance and effectively adjusting to the ever-changing sports environment. By spotlighting the constraints of conventional models, it encouraged the adoption of more dynamic approaches, enriching our comprehension regarding the interplay between short- and long-term planning. The second study, a case study, delivered an in-depth qualitative-driven analysis of a high-level Spanish canoeing coach, to understand how he perceived the dynamic interplay between the short- and long-term timescales. The nature, magnitude, and timing of adaptations that he promoted in his planning were analysed in a specific real-life context, while exploring the whys behind such adaptations. This study highlighted the importance of adaptability in response to dynamic challenges, expanding our understanding of how coaches navigate real-world planning complexities. The overall body of work composing this dissertation contributes to a more grounded understanding of the sports planning process. Moreover, by discussing and acknowledging the need for future research delving into the interplay between short- and long-term planning within diverse sporting contexts, it emphasizes the importance of exploring comprehensively this topic.
