Staying in the game? Predicting intention to quit in Norwegian elite and high-level female football players
(Bleiben sie im Spiel? Vorhersage der Ausstiegsabsicht bei norwegischen Elite- und Spitzenfußballerinnen)
Research on psychological factors in female football is limited including the reasons for players retiring early. The aim of the study was to investigate whether psychological and demographic factors could predict female players` intention to quit (ITQ) playing football. Study participants were female players from 19 out of 20 highest-ranked football clubs in Norway. Data were collected before (N = 175) and after the competitive season (N = 118). An online questionnaire included demographic variables and scales assessing mental distress, perceived motivational climate, work-conflict, work-family conflict and ITQ. A linear mixed model demonstrated that work-family conflict and age were the only significant predictors of ITQ. As financial funds in female football are limited, many players have to study or work besides playing, leaving limited time for other personal commitments. We argue that increasing the financial resources around female teams may reduce work-family conflict and in turn prolong their careers.
