Multimedia-supported tactical learning in soccer

(Multimedial gestütztes taktisches Lernen im Fußball)

A characteristic of modern soccer playing is the importance of group and team tactical capabilities. A particularly popular defensive tactic is zonal coverage or area coverage, which is used by almost all high-ranking teams. Unlike man-to-man coverage, coaches find this type of organization more efficient but rather difficult to teach, because the players' attention needs to be focused on several different aspects (ball, opponents, teammates) at any time and playing situation change dynamically (Bangsbo & Peilersen, 2002). Leser, Uhlig and Uhlig (2007) presented a multimedia teaching and learning application that enables personns with little previous knowledge lo learn and teach zonal coverage in soccer efficiently. This paper gives an overview of the original e-learning application, describes the underlying concepts and then presents the system extensions developed on the basis of the results of a program evaluation.
