Portraits of high performance rhythmic gymnastics in Brazil - Analysis and proposals

(Portraits von Hochleistungs RSG in Brasilien - Analyse und Vorschläge)

The Brazilian Gymnastics Federation is the institution responsible for "directing, disseminate, promote, organize and refine" gymnastics in all its possibilities (CBG, 2008, p.4), organizing events and championships. In the case of RG, the federation has the responsibility of promoting national championships. Looking at some of Ihc portraits of high performance RG*s in Brazil it is possible to conclude that they were constituted in two moments, the first being a few years ago (only 70 years) and the second of recent history, about 20 years, with medals and standout places in the international scenario, especially in the group's program. Changes in the many factors related to the development of Brazilian gymnastics in genera] are required, as well in rhythmic gymnastic. In concern to the general aspects of gymnastics, we refer to the study of Cruz. Paolicllo and Toledo (2010) about the role of universities, the media, the CBG and federations, among others. Regarding the aspects that affect specifically RG's development, previously analyzed data and others arising from a broader scenario, such as from the participation in events, courses, meetings with officials, among others, allows us to present the some issues and the possibilities for overcoming them: • There is still an insufficient number of training centers, given the size of the Brazilian territory, and the offer of the sport in different states. Thus, this increase is necessary and can be taken at first with a center by region (and there may be more than one per region, depending on the results already obtained by each state in the same region). • There is a lack of investment in training technicians, as well as in organizing judges courses, or exchanges (national and international), which could be promoted by CBG and also by universities (alone or in partnership). • Not all physical education courses in the country include rhythmic gymnastics as a content of gymnastics' discipline. Thus, it is necessary that we have a greater investment in the formation of these professionals, comprehending the rhythmic gymnastics in curriculum, both in teaching and in high performance. • There should be an increase in the input of rhythmic gymnastics in the school's physical education curriculum, providing access to a greater number of people, since it is shown by this research that little of the sport is present in the context of schools. • Better structuring of RG's massification events in many states and at the national level (diversification of difficulty levels, local and regional phases with better infrastructure, various forms of awards and classification etc.), motivating greater participation of the gymnasts (beginners, intermediate, and training), especially considering that athletes comes from different contexts (schools, clubs, associations, university extension projects). • The creation of more and better opportunities for dialogue between experts and researchers to exchange knowledge, which may enhance RG's high performance. Finally, in order to achieve greater development of high performance RG's we can benefit from the international experience, using currentexperiences as a database of ideas for future reflection, reconstruction and execution. In this way, we can take advantage from these national's portraits, identifying their problems and trying to outline some solutions from scientific studies as well as from the experiences of other countries. There are a variety of possibilities in Cuba (role of government of shaping the sport and creating training centers), in Eastern European countries, Australia and Japan (in training programs, as pointed out by Nunomura, 2001), and in the program "FIG Academy", which seeks to bring the different countries a new framework of knowledge for the development of high performance gymnastics (three technical levels, addressed to beginners and experienced technicians).1
