Analytics in the Finnish Elite League
(Analysen der finnischen Eliteliga)
At an increasing pace, analytics is becoming part of organisations` decision-making in many different industries and sports organisations is not an exception. Utilizing analytics in sports organisations is not a new insight but the practical implementation of it varies a lot between different sports. Compared to other big sports, utilizing analytics in ice hockey is more difficult and not as common as it is in many other big sports due to the fast pace and fundamentals of the game. The objective of this research was to get briefly acquainted with sports analytics and find new insights from the Finnish Elite Leagues statistics.
This research used two research questions to help to reach the objective. These questions were quantitative questions and regression analysis was used to answer them. The first question analyses the relationship between teams` special situation performance with corresponding teams` goal difference and the second question evaluated if points made by defencemen have a greater effect on teams` points than forwards points have.
As expected, special situation performance had a strong positive correlation with team goal difference. Special situations are a core part of ice hockey and thereby succeeding in them will often lead to success in other areas. Points made by forwards had slightly higher significance than defencemen points in terms of team points in a season.
