This study documented the prevalence of medical Problems among trained male Boxers of Guyanese origin. A prospective study of 160 consecutive Boxers (100 Amateurs and 60 Professionals) was carried out at the National Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana between Oct 1992 And Oct. 1994. Routine medical examination was Carried out within 24hrs. of the fights utilising the British Boxing Board of Control format. Among Professional Boxers, 6 (10%) had Anaemia, 4(7%) had ulcers of the hand, 3(5%) had cardiac related complaints, 4(7%) had elevated Systolic pressure and 4(7%) had visual acuity defects. Anaemia was parasitic and nutritional in origin. Ulcers were situated on the dorsum of the fingers. Cardiac findings were associated with Ischaemic changes and Bradycardia on EKG. One Boxer had unilateral eye blindness. The mean age of the Professional Boxers was 23yrs. Among Amateur Boxers 2(2%) Had Anaemia of parasitic origin.The mean age of Amateur Boxers was 16yrs. Conclusion: a) The nutritional aspect of Boxers health needs to be improved with special emphasis on Anaemic states. b) Boxers with visual loss or ulcers of the hand must adhere to medically unfit decisions. Herein lies the need for coaches and trainers to be knowledgeable in Sports medicine decisions. c) Mandatory once yearly EKG, Blood count and Parasitic stool tests must be performed on all Professional Boxers.
