Correlation between functional movement patterns and performance metrics in national level female handball players
(Korrelation zwischen funktionellen Bewegungsmustern und Leistungskennzahlen bei Handballspielerinnen auf nationaler Ebene)
Background: Handball is a high-intensity, contact-based team sport that requires a combination of speed, agility, and explosive power.
Purpose: This study examined the relationship between Functional Movement Screen (FMS) scores and physical performance metrics, including agility, sprinting speed, and vertical jump height among national-level female handball players in Bangladesh.
Methods: This study employs a descriptive and observational research methodology. Twenty-five national-level female handball players aged 14 to 17 years participated in FMS assessments and performance tests, including the T-test, zig-zag agility test, 5m to 30m sprint tests, and arm-free countermovement jumps. Correlation analyses were performed using SPSS with significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: The total FMS score did not significantly correlate with most performance measures. However, specific FMS subtests particularly Shoulder Mobility and Active Straight Leg Raise (ASLR) showed moderate and significant correlations with agility (r = -0.38 to -0.42), short sprint times (r = -0.37 to -0.45), and jump performance (r = 0.44).
Conclusions: These findings suggest that isolated movement patterns may better predict sport-specific performance than overall FMS scores. Coaches and practitioners may benefit from integrating targeted FMS assessments to optimize athletic performance and minimize injury risk in female handball athletes.
