Does gluteus medius muscle strength affect balance and jumping performance in elite female handball players?
(Beeinflusst die Stärke des Musculus gluteus medius die Gleichgewichts- und Sprungleistung von Elite-Handballerinnen?)
Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between gluteus medius (GMed) muscle strength, anthropometric characteristics, balance, and jumping performance in elite female handball players. Thirty-nine (24.15 ± 6.47 years) elite female handball players were included. Equipment and methods GMed strength was assessed via handheld dynamometer; horizontal jump performance by using the single leg hop test (SLH) and vertical jump performance (SLVJ) by the VertiMetric. The Stork Balance Test (SBT) and Y Balance Test (YBT) were used to evaluate static and dynamic balance, respectively. Results There was a significant moderate relationship between the GMed strength and SLVJ scores in both sides (r = 0.389-0.469; P < 0.05). The only significant strong correlations were found between GMed strength and anterior parameter of YBT in both sides (r = 0.535-0.656; P < 0.05). There was no relationship between GMed strength and SLH, SBT scores in any sides. Conclusions The results of the present study indicate that GMed strength is associated with the only anterior reach of dynamic balance and jumping performance; therefore, it is recommended to include GMed muscle strengthening exercises in the training programs of handball players to improve performance and reduce risk of injuries.
