Determination of aerobic and anaerobic structure of line drill test in young basketball players.
(Bestimmung der aeroben und anaeroben Struktur des Linien-Lauftests mit jungen Basketballern)
Aim: It is known that a comprehensive warm-up program helps injury prevention (Mandelbaum, et al., 2005). Additionally, some studies indicate that physical performance parameters are affected by injury prevention warm-up (Pasanen, 2009; Kilding, et al., 2008).The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of comprehensive warm-up protocols (F-MARC The 11+) on vertical jump and agility performance of junior basketball players.
Methods: Twenty boys (mean ± SD: age 10.7 ± 0.3 yrs; height 179.20 ± 7.51, weight 47.61 ± 12.30 kg, percentage of body fat: 14.44 ± 7.68 %) from two local basketball clubs, who trained 3 days per week, with 2.1 ± 0.6 years sports experience, participated in this study. Players were randomly assigned to either an experimental (Exp, n = 10) or a control (Con, n = 10) group. The experimental group followed the F-MARC 11+ program for 20 minutes during the warm-up phase of each training season for ten weeks, and the control group performed their regular warm-up routine. Both groups performed the vertical jump and pro-agility tests at the beginning and the end of the ten-week training session.
Results: Homogeneity for height, weight, body fat percentage, vertical jump and agility was determined by Mann Whitney-U. There were no differences (p>0.05). A paired sample t-test was used to assess the changes in vertical jump and agility values after ten weeks. The mean of the agility pre-test results was 6.358 ±0.27 seconds and post-test was 6.121±0.34 seconds. Since p=0.001, a significant difference was found between agility performance values.
Discussion: The comprehensive warm-up program led to significant changes in agility in the present study. This is a desirable result because basketball is characterized by many quick movements such as sudden speed-ups, stops and turns. Previous studies indicated that the 11+ resulted in improved speed and horizontal jump leg power and coordination in athletes (Kilding, et al., 2008; Chimera, et al, 2009).
Conclusion: The results of this study show that 'The F-MARC 11+' comprehensive warm-up is an appropriate and effective tool for improving basketball-specific physical performance characteristics of junior basketball players.
