Mechanical properties of leg muscles: a strength-independent optimum loading in vertical jumping
(Mechanische Eigenschaften der Beinmuskeln: Eine von der Kraft unabhängige Belastung bei vertikalen Sprüngen)
The aim of this review paper is to present recent evidence on the effects of external loads on dynamic output of maximum performance movements. Both individual muscles and muscular systems typically produce maximum power output when acting against the optimum external loads that correspond to a certain percentage of muscle strength (i.e., the 'strength-dependent' behavior). Here, we present recent sets of data suggesting that the optimum load in maximum vertical jumps could be one's own body mass, regardless of the strength of the leg muscles (the 'strength-independent' behavior). Implications for understanding the design and function of neuromuscular system, as well as for the refining training protocols are discussed.
