Continuous glucose monitoring in endurance athletes: interpretation and relevance of measurements for improving performance and health
Key Points:
1. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has emerged as an easily assessable physiological metric and has come into use by endurance athletes with the objective of gaining insight into dietary needs and monitoring recovery and training load.
2. Endurance athletes represent a unique group and have repeatedly been shown to exhibit glucose profiles and responses to exercise and diet that challenge our understanding of glucose regulation.
3. Further research is therefore warranted to determine the value of CGM when providing assistance to endurance athletes in their pursuit to optimize training and competition outcomes, and manage a healthy approach to training.
