Mathematical models can help analyzing the effects of COVID-19 in sports competitions
We discuss how compartmental epidemiological models can help in understanding the propagation of SARS-CoV-2 during sports competitions. The particular way professional athletes interact during training and competition requires epidemic models to include special features not considered by classical models describing the evolution of a pandemic in society. While the unpredictability associated with the system does not allow us to foresee the exact number of infected athletes, we explain how mathematical models can be extremely useful to prepare for possible scenarios and to mitigate the risk of the epidemic spreading.
