Pommel horse tempo training: A training tool using auditory feedback and feedforward via 'smartbeat'
The double leg circle on Pommel Horse (PH) is a basic movement in Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) in which the gymnast swings his legs in a circle, while alternating support with his hands on the pommels. The complexity of the movement comes from balancing a rotating body on one or two hands, while keeping a straight body alignment and maintaining rotary motion. Expertise level of a gymnast has influence on the body alignment, on the ratio between the two-hand and one-hand support phase and on the ability to correct imbalance. Imbalance (and falls of the PH) can occur due to errors in the functional tempo (and rotating tempo) of a routine. The aim of this study was to analyze PH performance and to develop a training tool for tempo training of double leg circles with auditory feedback and feedforward for (future) elite gymnasts.
