The effect of HiHiLo training on the evaluation of the immune function of athletes

Introduction: Training has important effects on somatic function, changing blood, internal secretion and immune system function which is indicated by changes in indicators. This study tested those indexes including CD, IL-2, IL-4 and IFN-y, to estimate the affect of HiHiLo training and to discuss the possibility of the use of these indices to diagnose early changes of immune function. Methods Eighteen young men were divided into two groups: HiHiLo group (n=8) trained at sea level and lived for 4 weeks (10h /d, 7d /wk) in norm baric hypoxic rooms with 14.4% oxygen (simulating at altitude of 3000m), while the control (Con) group (n=10) trained and lived at sea level. Additionally the HiHiLo group exercised on the cycle ergometer at 72% VO2max intensity respectively in hypoxic rooms with 15.3% oxygen (2 times per week for 30 minutes). We examined many indices of the HiHiLo group, including many normal physical indexes, immune indexes and cytokines before exposure, ten hours after and once every week, while the same indices of the control group were measured at the beginning and the end of the intervention. Results / Discussion Normal physical indices and most immune indices did not change significantly in the HiHiLo group. The gene expression of some cytokines including IL-4 and IFN- , changed significantly in the HiHiLo group.
