Application of fibre optic sensors for measuring deformation of skis during alpine skiing

Although correlations of mechanical properties of skis and perceived riding properties of skiers are known, the characterization of the skis in the laboratory is not sufficient for an in-depth understanding of the ski-snow interaction (Yoneyama et al., 2010). On-field ski deflection measurements by adhered strain gauges or attached deflection sensor beams are limited due the trade-off between changing mechanical properties of the ski by adding weight and the number of sensors to increase spatial measurement resolution. This project aimed to evaluate the applicability of Fiber Optic Sensors for on-field measurements of a ski`s bending and torsional deformation without influencing the ski`s mechanics.
