Eccentric overload squats with the intelligent motion lifter: strength training for alpine skiing
Eccentric strength training has been used by elite alpine ski racers (Frohm et al, Hoppeler & Vogt, Refnes,). Eccentric overloading (EOL) employs an eccentric load that is heavier than the 1 repetition maximum (1RM). There is very little published work about athletes training with EOL. If safety is ensured, working with free weights is preferable as balance and coordination are also trained. The Intelligent Motion Lifter (IML) allows safe EOL with free weights and is currently in use at the University of Innsbruck. This case study describes the EOL training program of a world class female downhill ski racer preparing for the 2011-12 FIS World Cup season.
