Effects of whole body vibration and equivalent resistance training on strength and postural control in young skiers
(Auswirkungen von Ganzkörpervibration und äquivalentem Widerstand auf Kraft und Haltung bei jungen Skiläufern)
Context: Several studies have been undertaken in order to evaluate the effects of Whole Body Vibration (WBV). However, the additional value of WBV in a training program remains unknown.
Objective: The purpose of the study is to investigate if a WBV program will result in a better strength and postural control performance compared to an equivalent exercise program performed without vibration.
Design: Randomized, controlled trial comparing the effects of 6 weeks of a WBV training program and an equivalent resistance (ER) training program.
Participants: Thirty - three Belgian competitive skiers (ages 9 -15).
Main outcome Measure(s): The isokinetic plantar and dorsiflexion peak torque , the isokinetic knee flexion and extension peak torque, the explosive strength (high box test) and the postural control of the subjects was assessed before and after the training period.
Results: This study on young competitive skiers indicates that both training programs are able to significantly improve the isokinetic ankle and knee muscle strength and the explosive strength. Moreover, the increase in explosive strength and in plantar flexor strength at low speed was significantly higher in the WBV group in comparison to the increase made by the increase made by the ER group after six weeks. However, neither the WBV training nor the equivalent resistance training seems to have an effect on postural control.
Conclusions: A strength training program that includes WBV appears to have additive effects when training young skiers compared to an equivalent program that does not include WBV. Therefore, these findings support the hypothesis that WBV training may be a beneficial supplementary training technique in strength programs for young athletes.
