In targeted throwing tasks, performance can be improved by three different factors: "Noise Reduction", "Tolerance" and "Covariation" (Müller 2001). How are these factors related to the variability profile of the trajectory over repeated trials? Exemplary data from an experiment using a virtual dart throwing task show that movement trajectories chosen by the participants render a functional variability profile. The variability of both relevant parameters, i.e. angle and velocity is reduced during the time window in which the projectile is released. This specific profile is preserved while the amount of variability is further decreased with practice.
