The stretch-shortening cycle: Proposed mechanisms and methods for enhancement

Efficient stretch-shortening-cycle (SSC) mechanics result in energy conservation and enhanced propulsive forces based on the current review of research, elastic energy through tendon recoil and an increase in active state bacause of an increase in the working range seem the most plausible explanation for the SSC mechanism. Using the research presented, the SSC mechanism may be best developed using plyometrics pyramid ensuring the the atlete is technically competent at each stage before progressing in intensity and complexity. Strength triaining and SSC training should be performed concurrently. SSC drills should be based on strength capacities and sport-specific variables.
