Kenya

(Kenia)

Kenya is located on the eastern African seaboard, bordering the Indian Ocean to the east, Somalia to the northeast, Ethiopia and South Sudan to the north, and with Tanzania and Uganda to the south and west, respectively. It has a spectacular geographical landscape that includes the vast savannah, the Great Rift Valley - dotted with freshwater lakes, the Elementaita, Naivasha, Nakuru, and Turkana - and the magnificent mountainous regions that comprise eastern and western highlands, including Mt. Kenya, the highest mountain in the country, and Mt. Elgon, which borders Uganda on the west. Ethnically, Kenya consists of diverse linguistic groups, the Bantu, Nilotes, and Cushites, as well as diverse racial migrants who came from Europe, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Ethno-racial diversity makeup of the country point to a triple heritage - African, Arab and European - dating back to the late 1800s. As a multi-ethnic and multi-racial nation, Kenya has a rich heritage in sport, mainly athletics and recently distance events that include road racing and marathons, among other sports like netball, soccer, cricket, and rugby. Indigenous sport activities that characterized pre-colonial Kenya are mostly non-existent, making the current focus on elitism in sport a recent occurrence.
