Mental health in the youth athlete
Overtraining can result in depressed mood, fatigue, and physiologic and hormonal changes that perpetuate declines in performance, all of which can lead to burnout or withdrawal from sports.
Perfectionism is a common trait in athletes and has been associated with depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
Injured athletes should be closely monitored for signs of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, disordered eating, and substance misuse.
Future directions should emphasize the advancement of mental health literacy, decreasing stigma, and implementation of effective screen practices to optimize recognition and management of mental health concerns in young athletes.
