Normative values of tensiomography of selected muscle pairs in Slovenian artistic and rhythmic gymnastics

Tensiomiography (TMG) is a non-invasive method that objectively assess the nervous-muscular system, used for diagnostic and scientific research purposes. We wanted to find out the characteristics of muscles in gymnastics that are reflected through the different parameters of TMG according to the gender and age, to give normative values for gymnastics, to critically evaluate the results given the characteristics of the industry and normative data in other sports sectors. We have analyzed the results of the TMG measurements, which were obtained as a part of the annual measurements after the end of the competition period in gymnastics. There were 144 athletes involved in research from men`s sports gymnastics (MAG), women`s sports gymnastics (WAG) and rhythmic gymnastics (RG). The age ranged from 11 to 34 years old, therefore we divided them into categories according to FIG rules (FIG, 2016): Up to 14 years old - cadets (cad), 14 to 15 years - juniors (jun), over 15 years - seniors (sen). We have found that there were no differences in time of contraction (Tc) between the same categories, but there were significant differences in radial displacement (Dm) of ES muscle which exist due to lumbar and pelvic morphological differences between genders. The Dm in BF muscles decreases with age. Therefore we advise careful evaluation of hamstring muscles and preventative training to lower the incidence of hamstring injuries, which are common during sprinting activities. Dm in gymnasts does not differ much from other sports, but Tc is one of the shortest of all compared sports (football, volleyball, cycling), while the longest is in cycling. We have also observed the positive correlation between age and Tc in some quadriceps muscles in different categories. It is not known, whether the increase in Tc is training load related or biologically related. It would be sensible to check if TMG is somehow related sport performance in gymnastics and if the training is designed according to their needs, as the Tc is increasing over the age.
