Elite sport policy in the UK 1982-2012
What are the 'take away' messages?
1. The UK's recent success in the Olympic Games has been the result of a fundamental shift in policy over a 30 year period.
2. Vast amounts of money has been the catalyst to create a world class performance system and it is a truism for the UK that "more money in has equalled more medals out".
3. The UK's system has matured from being one of imitating others to one that is based on innovation and the creation of distinct competitive advantage through research and technology.
4. We can see that SPLISS I was a useful exercise in prompting the UK to address the relative weaknesses of talent identification and scientific research via a programme of continuous improvement.
5. We should realistically expect Brazil to have it s best ever Olympics in Rio 2016 - this must be earned as it will not be handed to you on a plate. You have a once in a life time opportunity to do something special with elite sport in Brazil, so please don't waste it.
