Scholastic profile of Argentine competitive tennis players

(Bildungsprofil argentinischer Tennisspieler)

The objective of this survey was to obtain the scholastic profile of Argentine junior tennis players. We studied 51 junior competitive tennis players of both sexes (23 female; 28 male) with an average age of 15.19 years (range 13-18; sd 1.29). Players were asked to complete a mostly closed questionnaire, comprising 19 items regarding the amount of weekly training days, number of daily hours training, necessity of more hours of training, school attendance, parents´ level of education and expectation to continue a professional tennis career. The main finding of this study was the high rate of school drop-out (i.e. those opting out of school on a regular basis). Thirty-one subjects (60.8%; 95% CI 46.1-73.8) attended school on a regular basis. Twenty players (39.2%; 95% CI: 26.2-53.9), however, did not go to school regularly. Although the drop-outs can obtain a greater amount of training hours, parents, coaches and players should consider that this decision involves a greater risk of total drop-out from school and a smaller possibility of accessing tertiary education.
