Strategy for Amateur Sport in Ontario
Announced in October 1996, the Strategy for Amateur Sport in Ontario provides clear direction for provincial government involvement in amateur sport.
Under the strategy, the government contributes to the development of athletic achievement from the novice through national levels. Taxpayers' dollars are used to support athletic development and competitions. Government assistance is targeted at sports recognized at the Ontario Games, the Canada Games and the Olympic Games, as well as to multi-sport organizations -- including those for athletes with disabilities and those co-ordinating competition in the secondary and post-secondary school systems.
The Sport Strategy is designed to strengthen coaching and leadership, promote a safe and accessible sport environment and encourage amateur sport organizations to build self-reliance. Increasing participation among children and youth is a priority to nurture self-discipline, teamwork and a sense of responsibility. Accordingly, the government supports multi-sport games, such as the Ontario Games, which foster the participation of youth.
