(The use of GPS for medical applications: First insights and perspectives)

Introduction: The aim of this short review was to present available data from the literature about the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for medical applications. Results to date: GPS has been used and applied in patients with different chronic diseases: multiple sclerosis, peripheral artery disease (intermittent claudication) and spine disease. The available studies showed that GPS is a useful and valid measure to assess walking capacity in such patients. Conclusion: Additional methodological validation and clinical application studies using GPS should be conducted in the future. Methodological considerations and possible perspectives are here presented.
