Performance measurement model for monitoring the biathlon centre's environmental impact

Because of climate change, the warming temperatures pose challenges for winter-dependent sports such as biathlon. The governing body of sports must be aware of the current situation so that future decisions are justified and responsible. Understanding the environmental im pacts of biathlon centres is important for the development of local processes and for reducing the burden on the environment through monitoring. The main objective of this research is to design a performance measurement model for mon itoring the responsibility and environmental impacts for biathlon centre. The second objec tive is to find out the key influencing factors from an environmental perspective. The re search is divided into a literature review and an empirical study. The literature review creates a theoretical basis for performance measurement, existing frameworks, responsibility and the most significant effects of the biathlon centre on the environment. The empirical part of the work examines the practices and development possibilities of Finnish centres, and the most important influential factors are investigated with the help of thematic interviews. The research revealed that the most important environmental factors in the biathlon centre are waste management, energy consumption, and water use in the production of artificial snow. A performance indicator suitable for a biathlon organization was designed according to a balanced scorecard and the measurement areas were environment, government and finance. The objective of the designed model is to act as a tool for the director of a biathlon centre or organization in guiding the strategy and monitoring the implementation. In conclusion, the need for a uniform measurement model was stated. This enables compar ison and monitoring between centres. It became apparent that current practices require im provements to increase sustainability. The challenges are the quality of the collected data and the implementation of the model which emphasizes the necessity of standardized practices and reliable data collection.
