Physiological determinants of sprint and distance performance level in elite cross-country skiers

(Physiologische Einflussgrößen auf Sprint- und Distanzleistung bei Skilangläufern)

Cross-country (XC) skiing is a demanding endurance sport where high aerobic capacity and skiing efficiency are regarded as important determinants of performance both in sprint and distance competitions. Additionally, anaerobic capacity and maximal speed have also been associated with sprint skiing performance. Although the majority of elite skiers compete both in sprint and distance races, but with different main preferences, no study to date has elucidated how different physiological capacities determine sprint and distance performance levels in such a group. Therefore, this study was designed to correlate physiological laboratory variables with performance level in XC sprint and XC distance using FIS-points.
