Relationship between race time and number of accurate shots of the five best biathletes in the 2009/10 world cup in the 10 km race

(Zusammenhang zwischen Wettkampfzeit und Trefferzahl der fünf besten Biathleten über 10 km im Weltcup 2009/2010)

INTRODUCTION: Knowing how to combine fitness with the ability to concentrate and shoot accurately in the firing zone are determinant factors for performance in Biathlon (Sattlecker et al., 2007, 2009). This statistical study analyzes the time and results of the five best biathletes in the different competitions of 2009/10 World Cup classified in the 10 km race. METHOD: A Line of basic statistical analysis was applied to the IBU 2010 official data, focusing on estimating average times with confidence intervals, the percentage of precision in the firing zone and the relationship between skiing time and errors using the regression method linear. RESULTS: Based on the slope of the regression statistics obtained in each case, b (-0,0044:0,1371), the results indicate a slight but clear trend for the number of failures to decrease (from 0, 0044 and 0.0413 failures) as the skiing time of these five skiers is greater. DISCUSSION: According to our analysis, fatigue affects performance in biathlon shooting (Huysmans et al., 2006). We agree with Mognoni et al. (2001), that high values of VO2max (> 65 ml min kg-1) and resting heart values close to 50 bpm. are essential for success in the shot (Coote, 2009). Other factors that affect performance are mental training and relaxation techniques (Groslambert et al. 2003). CONCLUSION: The data provided show the importance of precision in the shot biathlete performance. Technical preparation (precision in shooting) is more important than physical preparation to obtain results.
