Movement in the sand: Training implications for beach volleyball

Although at first look the differences in mechanics between beach and indoor volleyball may seem to be minimal, the characteristics of the performance environment in the beach game and the variability of that environment create quite a different set of movement requirements for optimal performance. How the human body compensates when moving through the sand should be a primary consideration when designing a sport-specific training program for a beach volleyball athlete.
