Swimming

(Schwimmen)

The priorities for coaches working in swimming should be centred on three key areas. The first should aim to enhance strength and power in the lower body so that performance for the start and turn can be maximised. The second area should focus on developing high levels of pulling strength in the upper body to maximise force production throughout the stroke and to minimise fatigue at maximal intensities. Finally, the third priority should be to ensure that both the shoulders and knees are addressed within the program design (particularly in strength phases) by selecting appropriate exercises that aim to enhance the stability of the joints. The lack of "off-sea- son" in this sport means that a concurrent method of incorporating in-pool conditioning and strength or power (dependent on time of year) may be the most practical approach to supporting a swimmer`s athletic development.
