Sudden cardiac death in athletes
(Plötzlicher Herztod bei Sportlern)
The sudden deaths of prominent athletes in the USA and abroad have drawn intense attention in the media and bewildered the public to SCD in sports. In this chapter, the author discusses the effect of athletics on the ECG and cardiac echocardiographic parameters, the epidemiology of SCD in the athlete, athletic activity triggering SCD, heart disease in athletes dying suddenly in the USA as compared to those in Europe, the pre-screening of competitive athletes in the USA and Europe and recommendations for athletes partaking in competitive sports.
