The backstroke start technique performed under old FINA rules: main findings, gaps and further technological advances

Conclusions of the research:
Competition analysis
. Similar start performance at 100 and 200 m;
. Underwater trajectory reduce 15-m start time.
Lab experiments
. Elite backstrokers depicted high variability in aerial and entry phases, and two upper limb trajectories;
. Feet staggered did not prevent from slipping down;
. Contradictions between feet immersed and emerged;
. Horizontal take-off and underwater glide velocity determined start performance;
. Entry deceleration more important than greater take-off horizontal velocity.
