How do asymmetries affect swimming performance?
This paper, the third in a series of four papers reviewing asymmetry in swimming, addressed the question 'how do asymmetries affect performance? In view of a paucity of directly related research papers on this topic the question was addressed with a combination of rationale based on mechanical principles and extant literature. The paper is in three sections: the effect of asymmetries in body shape and postureon resistance; the effect of strength and flexibility on propulsion;and specific effects of asymmetries during the propulsive actions, breathing, recovery and entry.
