Analysis of performance of the fencing lunge with regard to the difficulty level of a technical-tactical task

The purpose of the research is to measure of the structure of the lunge in epee fencing . Differences in the performance of the fencing lunge depend on the type and complexity of tactical tasks (feints, disengagements, bladework). Material and methods. The subject was an advanced, right-handed, 22-year-old female epee fencer and opponent was a senior male fencer, both are members of the Poland Epee Team. The use of surface electromyography (sEMG) and synchronized high-speed cameras allow a complete and thorough assessment of the motor pattern of an entire fencing action. Results. Present study show that technically complex fencing actions entail increased fencers` muscle activities. Moreover, the time of motor patterns is also extended in response to the longer programming phase of a movement. Conclusions. Complexity of a motor task affects sEMG readings and the sequence of activation of particular muscles
