Perspectives on coaching pace skill in distance running (and commentaries)
There are many physiological parameters that must be developed in elite distance athletes, thus coaches must organize their athletes` training in such a way as to help them acquire these attributes. In my several years of coaching inter-university distance runners, however, I often reflected upon what the `decision-making` skills were that my runners would need during competition. This was likely a consequence of the fact that, during the period when I was coaching, I was also examining the cognitive processes of expert `decision-makers` in sport as part of my doctoral studies. I also spent time considering how principles of motor learning could be extended into the coaching realm such that they might inform how I designed my practices for my athletes to help them become better decision-makers.
