How do we monitor swim training intensity?

Quantification (or monitoring) of training can be accomplished in several ways. Methods include physiological monitoring (heart rate, blood lactate, and oxygen consumption), training diaries, retrospective training questionnaires, and observational techniques (real-time analysis). What I would like to do in this paper is offer a brief critical appraisal of how I view each of these methods from an academic and practical perspective.
