Manufacture and application of the simulated altitude cabin

(Entwicklung und Einsatz einer Kabine zur Simulation von Höhenbedingungen)

Sports scientists and coaches have been paying more and more attention to simulated altitude training over recent years. As a training means, altitude training can increase the exercise load of athletes and also their oxygen carrying capacity. The first simulated altitude cabin in China was manufactured by Shandong Sports Science Center recently. It is 47.1m² and one of the biggest simulated altitude cabins in the world. In order to find out the quality and effects of the cabin, we have finished the preliminary research and have gained the expectant results. Method: Changing rate of pressure, stability of pressure, oxygen content and CO2 content were selected as the main testing technical parameters to compare with the designed technical parameters of the cabin. Two male and two female long distance runners were chosen to take the contrast test of the same exercise load. Subjects were tested on a Monark 829 bicycle and on a treadmill both in and out of the cabin. The evaluation indicator of the test was blood lactate. Five tests were taken for every athlete in each exercise. Samples were taken before exercise, immediately after, and 3, 5 and 7 seconds after. Four elite walk runners were selected for the other "higher living and lower training" tests. They lived in the cabin with the altitude set at 3,000m for 14 hours every day and were required to take the training out of the cabin the rest of the time. The main evaluation indicator is haemoglobin. The test lasted three weeks. Results: All the testing technical parameters of the cabin are qualified to compare with the designed parameters. The testing data show that the value of blood lactate for the same athlete after exercising in the cabin is higher than those outside of cabin. The data of the second test showed that the mean value of haemoglobin of the four elite athletes increased by 1.3g/dl when a comparison between pre and post values was conducted. Conclusion: The manufacture of the simulated altitude cabin was successful. The simulated altitude cabin can replicate that of the actual altitude.
